Create a Rustic and Inviting Dining Experience

Any time is an excellent time to implement a rustic theme into your home. Warm colors combined with rich textures and cozy details work together to create an inviting scene that welcomes and compels guests to gather and enjoy. Your dining room table is a perfect place to implement this type of decorating as you mix rich linens with wooden accents and heap the table high with the bountiful harvest of winter, summer, spring or fall. Creating a rustic table is simple and rewarding, as the welcoming scene invites family and guests to linger over food and conversation.

Here are some suggested items to use:

Start with the Table cloth and settings. Make them warm, earthy and natural. With most dining room tables, you want your table to be the focal point, so why cover it all up with a full tablecloth. Instead adorn it with a beautiful and rustic table runner with matching place mats. Take a look at some of these examples. Each set brings its own soft, rustic hues. You can pick one that carries the theme or sets the theme you want to display.

Next, lets take a look at your Tableware. For an earthy, natural look, choose a patternless set of dishes, or a very simple set. You can pick up on your pattern you choose for your table runner and place mats, or just continue the colors on into the dish set. Take a look at some of these for great visuals on what I’m talking about:

Glassware Tableware Flatware Napkins Napkin rings Rustic basket or heavy bowl Autumn fruit and/or vegetables such as apples, cranberries, squash and corn Candles Decorated place cards

Place a tablecloth on the table. Use an earthy, natural fiber tablecloth, such as a nubby brown or ivory linen Add place settings, including tableware, flatware, and glassware. When choosing these elements, think sturdy, heavy, and warm. In most cases, patternless dishes will make the most sense for a rustic table setting. For tableware, choose dishes that are heavy and simple. For glassware, choose heavy goblets in clear glass or amber tones. For flatware, use thick metal or wooden forks, spoons and knives. Use bronze napkin rings, or ones in reds or amber. Napkins should coordinate with the tablecloth. Add a rustic centerpiece, such as a heavy bowl filled with squash or corn or a rustic basket filled with apples. For a simpler approach, line the table with plain candles and scatter cranberries across the table.

Add place cards. They should be made of heavy, textured cardstock decorated with simple lettering or tiny colorful leaves. If your dinner table is already rustic in design, forgo the tablecloth and just add simple place mats. This lets the rustic look of the table show.

When I think of Rustic, it makes me think of wood, but Rustic can be so much more. While wood gives a warm, neutral color scheme, there are some other great materials that can be found just as naturally as wood. A few worthy to mention are metal, copper, stone, live or dried flowers, and seashells to name a few. There are a variety of uses for these other naturals. They can be used to make a centerpiece or display, piled in a bowl, on a tray or framed. You can use your imagination when it comes to decorating with natural items, because the sky is the limit and just about anything goes.

Here are a few examples of these materials in forms that can be great for your home, or as gift ideas.

A clock is a decorating piece that is truly functional, but can be a fabulous display. Lets explore the world of Rustic clocks and their value in matching the decor in your home. I have found so many favorites in this category it is hard for me to pick just one. Its just a good thing that clocks can be used in every room! Here are some great pieces to start with:

I love this pendulum clock especially as it is made from metal art, a favorite of mine. Finished in a beautiful Rainbow torch finish, this clock measures 12W x 1 1/2D x 20H. The rushing cowboys seem to be riding to the tick of the swinging pendulum. I especially like the silver star on the end of the pendulum arm. Super fun, great rustic decor!

Here is a variation on the same type of clock, with a cowboy reining in. This one has a colorized finish to it:

I do like this mantle clock entitled “Lazy Days”, its a cowboy figurine clock. Finished in a beautiful Rainbow rust torch finish. Measures 9W x 6H.

With an “old” iron horseshoe as a base, this western style Cheyenne Spur houses a classic antiqued clock. Measures 5″W x 8″D x 6″H. A true classic and it will look great sitting on a mantle, end table or coffee table.

Coat racks are a practical use item in your home, but come in such a variety of styles to choose from. Here are some examples of ways to add this usable item to your decor in a very fashionable way.

Take, for instance this designer Twig coat rack. This can actually be used to hang coats on, but it is artistically unique and adds beauty and elegance to your decor:
